On Friday, 17 June 2011, the Marianist Novices of the District of Eastern Africa made a pilgrimage to the Village of Mary, Mother of God, at the Kenya National Marian Shrine in Nakuru Diocese. After the visits of Pope John Paul II in 1980 and in 1985 for the Eucharistic Congress, the Kenyan Episcopal Conference decided to build a national Marian Shrine. The Nakuru Diocese was entrusted with the project because of the central location of the diocese in the country. The chapel, Way of the Cross, and Path of Salvation History have been constructed. A two million USD basilica is in constructed and is to be opened next year.
